The Evolution of Girl Dinner

You were probably already partaking in ‘Girl Dinner’ before anyone had a name for it.

A Caesar salad, a diet coke and fries — because 99.9% of the time, there is always fries. No exceptions. At the time it wasn't a trend yet, just a casual Wednesday.

Then in 2023, TikToker Olivia Maher filmed her plate – bread, cheese, grapes, pickles and called it her Girl Dinner. Suddenly millions of women had a name for something they'd been quietly doing forever. That's the thing about Girl Dinner:  it didn’t invent a behavior, it labeled one.

Then the audio hit.

Girl dinner. Girl dinnerrrrrrr. That sound took over TikTok and turned a relatable moment into a full-blown cultural event. Women everywhere started posting their own versions. Random things that they found in their fridge to create a unique spread. A single vegetable, some cheese and crackers. To a salad, side of fries and a glass of wine.

Whatever it was, it followed the same unspoken formula: something light, something indulgent, something that said I am feeding myself whatever I want and crave tonight. Just you, your plate, and the satisfaction of having exactly what you were in the mood for.

What made Girl Dinner so trendy was that there were no rules. It could be anything. A few grapes and salami. A spread of something that you will enjoy consuming. Big or small, fancy or lazy – it was all Girl Dinner! Women weren’t just eating, they were sharing what they were eating and that's when things really took off.

It didn't take long before restaurants began to notice. Of course they did – it was a brilliant idea!

The timing was perfect and almost too smart. Weeknights, especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays are usually the industry's dead zone. It's hard to fill seats and even harder to justify full staffing. But positioning a random Wednesday as a Girl Dinner Night and suddenly you have an occasion.

Now, restaurants have a set menu for their Girl Dinner Night, it typically follows the same format. An entree, a carb, and a drink all combined at a discounted price. It’s simple, affordable and it gets people through the door.

Women who would have otherwise stayed home raiding the fridge are now sitting across from a friend at their favorite restaurant. It doesn't feel like a promotion but like a plan.

From your fridge, to your For You Page, to a restaurant near you.
